Backstreet Courtyard Key Location

· 5 min read

The Pangzhen Backstreet Courtyard Key comes from the Agonized Ironmask quest in the Mountain of Imprisonment, not from a nearby container in Pangzhen. The collected route connects it to Ledger of Atonement and then to Bai Xue's request. You need later progression before the locked courtyard near the Green Serpent House can be opened.

Find the relevant NPCs in the mountain

The published route places the Agonized Ironmask and Female Puppet along the approach toward the Shrine Outer Gate. Speaking to them immediately may not advance the quest, and the source reports new dialogue only after completing Hero's Lament and Moji's Relic. Treat that as the route the author documented rather than as proof that any single earlier conversation should always start the fight.

When Ledger of Atonement becomes available, the route involves returning a book from the caves. The ensuing Ironmask fight provides the key together with a Sha-Chi Amber Fragment. This is a quest-specific Ironmask encounter and should not be confused with the Iron Butcher who awards the mask used to temper Jagged Steel.

Return for Bai Xue's request

After the Ironmask encounter, the Female Puppet is identified as Bai Xue and asks you to bring a Bloodstained Necklace to her real body. Take the new courtyard key back to Pangzhen and cross the bridge from the Green Serpent House toward the locked gate near Old Man Gen's house. The route continues over the walls and rooftops into Bai Xue's home.

Opening the gate is therefore only the access step, not the end of the associated quest. Place the necklace at the relevant body and inspect the courtyard afterward. The collected route describes a Memory Flower there, another outside and the Snow and Blood accessory obtained from the tree.

Understand the equipment reward

Snow and Blood is tied to a bleed-focused offensive setup in the collected accessory coverage. That makes the quest especially relevant to players using Jagged Steel, but it is not a requirement for every weapon build. Evaluate the item's stated condition before spending polishing materials on it.

If dialogue does not match the described route, compare your progress in the mountain and related Tales before assuming the key has vanished. The source itself documents a dependency rather than an immediate interaction. This guide does not invent a reset command or a guaranteed repair for a quest state that the collected material does not resolve.

Follow the errand before searching the courtyard

This key is connected to the Agonized Ironmask errand and Bai Xue's necklace, so the locked courtyard is only one end of the route. If you are missing the key, review the earlier conversation and delivery rather than assuming it must lie beside the door. The sequence connects the Mountain of Imprisonment material to a later return to Pangzhen.

The similar names in this quest are worth keeping separate from combat guides. Agonized Ironmask is not sufficient evidence that a guide titled Iron Butcher describes the same character or reward. Follow the quest and inventory names here, then use the courtyard entry to continue toward the documented rewards instead of borrowing an unrelated boss route.

Understand the Pipa route that links the regions

Myst repairs the Illusory Pipa at her tavern in Pangzhen after you recover its Head, Backplate and Strings. The parts come from Dusk in the Village of Lu, Yubi in the Mandate Encampment and Yan Qiansui at Meigu Lake. Finding the broken instrument starts a longer journey; it does not mean all three repair pieces are available beside its starting location.

The restored instrument has an exploration role as well as a combat role. It clears the relevant mist and wind barriers, including the route toward the Mountain of Imprisonment, where several other quests continue. This makes the Pipa a useful way to understand why a journal objective can remain unresolved while you progress elsewhere.

Treat each newly opened area as a reason to recheck your existing quests. The mountain connects to the Herald's Illusion, Cui's family search and the wider mysteries around the lake, while the Mandate Training Grounds contribute both a Pipa part and another portal interaction. Following those dependencies saves more travel than searching every region again without a specific missing item in mind.

Choose accessories before spending polishing materials

Accessory polishing becomes available after meeting Jewel in the Village of Lu. Once unlocked, it can be accessed through Bells, making it part of your regular preparation rather than a reason to revisit her shop before every fight. Polishing consumes Remnant Dust and the appropriate crystal, and the preview tells you how the particular accessory changes.

The useful question is whether the effect helps your current loadout often enough to justify an equipped slot. A bonus tied to one weapon category is less consistent if you keep switching into a different category, while a resistance accessory can be excellent for one encounter without becoming a permanent choice. Read the conditions as carefully as the displayed percentage.

Accessory slots expand through ability upgrades, but offensive, defensive and support equipment still have category limits. Do not copy a full late-game loadout onto a character that has not unlocked the required capacity. More importantly, do not assume that polishing can be refunded like ordinary weapon enhancement; the collected accessory guidance warns that the material investment is permanent.

Keep the later story checkpoint separate

The Mirage Estate warning concerns the larger mystery and ending route, not the earlier settlement change after Bai Chilian. Published ending guides recommend completing the available purple story quests before entering the estate. If the game warns about unfinished business, review the journal before continuing rather than assuming that the ability to fast travel makes the warning harmless.

The important connected threads include the Illusory Pipa, the Herald's Illusion and Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. These lead through optional regions, the Acolyte Masks and the Crystal Puppet Eyes, so progress can be blocked by a missing prerequisite somewhere else. A quest being marked optional means the main story can continue without it; it does not mean the quest is irrelevant to the ending you want.

Some objectives continue inside the estate, including later steps involving Long Pillars and Quick Hand Zhang. The practical rule is to finish every currently available prerequisite, then continue those ongoing objectives when the next area makes them accessible. Avoid turning a guide's shorthand about finishing everything first into an impossible demand to collect an item located beyond the checkpoint itself.
