Secrets at the Heart of the Lake

· 5 min read

Secrets at the Heart of the Lake begins with the Firefly memory thread in the Village of Lu and continues through Dusk, the Acolyte Masks, the Crystal Puppet Eyes and the hidden realm at Meigu Lake. It is a multi-region mystery tied to the true-ending route. Completing one local objective does not finish the whole quest, so follow the journal as new areas become accessible.

Start with Firefly’s memories and Dusk

The collected ending walkthrough directs you to gather Firefly's Memory Flowers in the Village of Lu. Those open access to the optional area near the Temple of the Blue Fireflies and the route to Dusk, the Puppeteer. This is separate from simply collecting any flowers you happen to find in other regions.

Defeating Dusk advances the mystery and contributes a part needed for the Illusory Pipa. Keep both objectives in view when checking the reward and subsequent scene. If another part of the lake quest remains inaccessible, that can reflect the next traversal dependency rather than a failure to complete Dusk's encounter.

Connect the Manor and mountain routes

The Yang Crystal Puppet item is linked to the encounter beneath Crimson Manor. Opening the Manor requires the Puppet's Tongue from the three-portal Herald's Illusion chain, which in turn reaches into the Mountain of Imprisonment. These dependencies explain why the mystery cannot be finished by repeatedly searching the Village of Lu alone.

The wider route provides the two Crystal Puppet Eyes and the Acolyte Masks. Keep the named items distinct in your notes and confirm them against the quest journal rather than counting similar-looking rewards. The collected sources use slightly different shorthand for the eye items, but the relevant distinction is the Yin and Yang pair required by the later interaction.

Enter the hidden realm at Meigu Lake

The collected route uses all four Acolyte Masks at the Four Guardians' Mirror in the frozen northwestern part of Meigu Lake. Beyond it, continue through the Discordance realm and defeat the Blizzard Blademaster. The statue appearing afterward is the interaction that uses the two Crystal Puppet Eyes to transport you to the Heart of the Lake.

At the ritual site, defeat the cultists and continue the encounter involving Inanis. The source identifies this as the conclusion of the Secrets at the Heart of the Lake thread. Confirm the journal state before treating the larger ending preparation as finished, because other optional-story requirements can still remain.

Respect the estate warning

The ending guidance recommends resolving the currently available purple story quests before entering Mirage Estate. Being able to travel back afterward is not proof that an unfinished prerequisite remains recoverable. Use the warning as a review point and separate genuinely completed quests from chains that still have an available step elsewhere.

Treat the lake as part of the larger mystery

The lake route intersects with the restored Pipa and the optional regions used by the ending quest chain. If the next step depends on a tool or story item from elsewhere, continue that specific prerequisite rather than searching the same shoreline again. A quest spanning several regions can remain active while its next accessible objective is outside the lake itself.

Before the Mirage Estate warning, review the related masks, eyes and optional mystery threads together. Having opened one route does not automatically mean every required conversation or ritual is complete. Keep the journal's current objective attached to the named item you need so that the final preparation checks reflect actual quest progress.

Understand the Pipa route that links the regions

Myst repairs the Illusory Pipa at her tavern in Pangzhen after you recover its Head, Backplate and Strings. The parts come from Dusk in the Village of Lu, Yubi in the Mandate Encampment and Yan Qiansui at Meigu Lake. Finding the broken instrument starts a longer journey; it does not mean all three repair pieces are available beside its starting location.

The restored instrument has an exploration role as well as a combat role. It clears the relevant mist and wind barriers, including the route toward the Mountain of Imprisonment, where several other quests continue. This makes the Pipa a useful way to understand why a journal objective can remain unresolved while you progress elsewhere.

Treat each newly opened area as a reason to recheck your existing quests. The mountain connects to the Herald's Illusion, Cui's family search and the wider mysteries around the lake, while the Mandate Training Grounds contribute both a Pipa part and another portal interaction. Following those dependencies saves more travel than searching every region again without a specific missing item in mind.

Keep the later story checkpoint separate

The Mirage Estate warning concerns the larger mystery and ending route, not the earlier settlement change after Bai Chilian. Published ending guides recommend completing the available purple story quests before entering the estate. If the game warns about unfinished business, review the journal before continuing rather than assuming that the ability to fast travel makes the warning harmless.

The important connected threads include the Illusory Pipa, the Herald's Illusion and Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. These lead through optional regions, the Acolyte Masks and the Crystal Puppet Eyes, so progress can be blocked by a missing prerequisite somewhere else. A quest being marked optional means the main story can continue without it; it does not mean the quest is irrelevant to the ending you want.

Some objectives continue inside the estate, including later steps involving Long Pillars and Quick Hand Zhang. The practical rule is to finish every currently available prerequisite, then continue those ongoing objectives when the next area makes them accessible. Avoid turning a guide's shorthand about finishing everything first into an impossible demand to collect an item located beyond the checkpoint itself.

Return when your traversal tools change

A blocked route often means you need a later tool, not that you overlooked a nearby key. The Feather Bow can interact with certain hanging objects, Flaming Mane clears damp brambles, and the Tiger Cannon breaks the rock barriers associated with it. Their discovery order is part of the exploration structure, so an early map can legitimately contain a passage you cannot open yet.

The Illusory Pipa is another important example because its repair spans multiple regions. Once restored, it clears specified mist and wind barriers and opens access to further exploration, including the Mountain of Imprisonment route. Keep the name of the obstacle and the nearest Bell together in your notes so you can return with the right tool.

Opening a physical route and preserving a quest are separate concerns. A new Phantom Edge may let you revisit a chest later, while a story event can already have changed the NPC who would have given you a reward. Before advancing a major quest, check the journal and the relevant missable conditions instead of assuming that fast travel makes every unfinished objective recoverable.
