When to Heal
· 5 min readHeal after the enemy has finished a sequence or while you have a clear recovery window, and use a Bell between encounters when you can safely return to one. A gradual restorative should be used early enough to take effect; it is a poor substitute for an immediate heal when the next hit could defeat you. The right moment depends on both the medicine you selected and the attack pattern you are facing.
Identify the recovery type first
The Healing Gourd restores health directly, while several other medicines combine gradual healing with a secondary benefit. Merciful Dew, for example, is discussed as a strong general restorative whose healing is not immediate. Looking only at the health total can therefore hide the difference between a rescue item and a buff that supports the next stretch of a fight.
Read the selected item's description before testing it in a dangerous encounter. If its benefit arrives over time, create space and maintain your defense instead of expecting the whole heal at the moment you press the button. A slowly moving health bar may be normal item behavior rather than evidence that the control failed.
Do not confuse distance with safety
Moving away can help, but an enemy with a gap-closing move or a projectile may still punish a drink. A completed combination or a guard-break opening gives you more concrete information than distance alone. If you repeatedly take damage during the same heal attempt, change the timing rather than simply repeating it farther from the boss.
A medicine with a defensive or Sha-Chi-related secondary effect can help prepare for pressure, but that does not make every use invulnerable. The collected recommendations reserve an invulnerability-related benefit for a particular later medicine and its upgraded behavior. Do not transfer that property to a starting Gourd or another item merely because both appear in the medicine menu.
Improve recovery between attempts
Return to a Bell to refill supplies and inspect your equipment after a failed attempt. In the unmodified game, ordinary defeated enemies do not reappear simply because you rest, so a cleared path gives you a useful recovery option. This corrects a conflicting line in one collected healing page that describes the opposite behavior.
Healing Art and medicine upgrades address different parts of your recovery setup. The former is an ability investment available through Bells, while direct medicine enhancement requires later access to the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen. If you have collected Healer's Memory items but cannot yet use them, that can be a progression requirement rather than a broken upgrade menu.
Review what happened after drinking
If a heal appears to accomplish very little, check whether the item restored health gradually or whether another hit immediately removed the recovery. Those cases call for different changes: an immediate restorative can suit a short opening, while taking less follow-up damage may matter more than changing the medicine. Watch the charge count and health bar so that your next attempt responds to the actual problem.
Outside combat, a cleared path to a Bell can be the most practical recovery option. Standard enemies staying defeated makes that return trip different from games that refill the entire route when you rest. Use that opportunity to replenish and adjust your equipment before voluntarily committing to another difficult encounter.
Use weapon switching to protect your Sha-Chi
Weapon switching has a defensive purpose as well as an offensive one: it restores Soul's Sha-Chi. Blocking and heavy attacks spend that resource, so an otherwise comfortable fight can turn dangerous when you keep using the same weapon with an almost empty meter. Switch before the enemy breaks your guard, then decide whether the next opening is safe enough to attack.
The switch has a cooldown, which prevents it from being an unlimited answer to every incoming hit. Watch the enemy's guard meter alongside your own instead of emptying your resources whenever a combo becomes available. When the enemy is about to recover from a break, ending your attack early can leave you better prepared for the next exchange.
A practical pairing gives each weapon a recognizable job. One can build damage or a status effect while the other helps you recover, control a crowd or create a break. That division is more useful than choosing two names from a ranking and treating their individual damage ratings as proof that they work well together.
Upgrade the move set you actually use
Forge introduces equipment upgrades at the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley. After that introduction, the upgrade function is available from Bells, so you do not need to travel back to her whenever you obtain another material. Main weapons and Phantom Edges use their own material categories; possession of a large pile of one material does not mean it can upgrade every item.
An upgrade can unlock an action or a passive effect, not just increase a displayed attack value. Check the equipment's advanced information and the next upgrade preview before deciding whether another level will change the way you fight. A recommendation that relies on an unlocked ability can perform very differently when you try it with the base weapon.
Weapons can be reverted to recover their investment, but later upgrade thresholds introduce reforge-talisman requirements. Read the refund screen before confirming, particularly when comparing a main weapon with a Phantom Edge, because they do not use the same reforge item. Do not extend this refund rule to accessory polishing: that is a separate system with different costs.
Choose accessories before spending polishing materials
Accessory polishing becomes available after meeting Jewel in the Village of Lu. Once unlocked, it can be accessed through Bells, making it part of your regular preparation rather than a reason to revisit her shop before every fight. Polishing consumes Remnant Dust and the appropriate crystal, and the preview tells you how the particular accessory changes.
The useful question is whether the effect helps your current loadout often enough to justify an equipped slot. A bonus tied to one weapon category is less consistent if you keep switching into a different category, while a resistance accessory can be excellent for one encounter without becoming a permanent choice. Read the conditions as carefully as the displayed percentage.
Accessory slots expand through ability upgrades, but offensive, defensive and support equipment still have category limits. Do not copy a full late-game loadout onto a character that has not unlocked the required capacity. More importantly, do not assume that polishing can be refunded like ordinary weapon enhancement; the collected accessory guidance warns that the material investment is permanent.
