How to Repair the Illusory Pipa

· 5 min read

Repair the Illusory Pipa by bringing its Head, Backplate and Strings to Myst at her tavern in Pangzhen. The components come from Dusk in the Village of Lu, Yubi in the Mandate Encampment and Yan Qiansui in southern Meigu Lake. The broken instrument appears much earlier than the last repair part, so this is a multi-region quest rather than a single local pickup.

Recover the Head in the Village of Lu

The collected route links access to Dusk's area with the Firefly Memory Flowers. Follow that optional thread to reach the dark pit and the Puppeteer encounter rather than assuming the main village exit completes everything there. Defeating Dusk provides the Pipa Head along with another reward, making the fight an important step in more than one exploration chain.

The source describes puppet summons and an additional clone as pressure during the encounter. That makes it useful to distinguish the boss objective from the surrounding enemies rather than treating every visible target as equivalent. This guide does not add an unsupported damage threshold or a guaranteed strategy beyond the actions documented in the collected route.

Find the Backplate at the Training Grounds

The Backplate comes from Yubi, No. 21 Swordfighter Puppet, in the northern Mandate Training Grounds. Reaching the region first requires the gate key found through Pangzhen progression. If you are waiting at the Village of Lu gate, obtaining that key is the dependency to resolve before searching for the Pipa component.

After the fight, inspect the area behind the building for the portal associated with the Herald's Illusion. That interaction is separate from collecting the Backplate but matters to the wider optional story route. Doing both while you are there avoids a return visit caused by treating the boss reward as the area's only objective.

Collect the Strings at Meigu Lake

Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden, is found in the ruined songhouse in southern Meigu Lake. The collected guide describes blue projectiles to reflect and red ones to avoid, with the guard break creating the opportunity to damage her normally. Keep the musical projectile colors separate from an assumption that every visible attack can simply be blocked.

Victory provides the Strings, completing the three-part repair set. Return to Myst rather than expecting the inventory to automatically turn the broken instrument into its finished form. Once restored, the Pipa becomes both a combat Phantom Edge and the tool used at the relevant mist and wind barriers.

Use the repaired instrument beyond combat

The exploration function opens important routes, including the path toward the Mountain of Imprisonment. It can also clear specific barriers around Meigu Lake and Pangzhen described in the collected guide. This is why the repair quest is tied to larger mysteries and ending preparation, not merely to filling another equipment slot.

Track the missing component by its name

If Myst cannot complete the repair, check whether the Head, Backplate or Strings is still missing instead of repeating the entire route. Those names point to Dusk, Yubi and Yan Qiansui respectively, which makes the unfinished dependency easier to locate. A journal reference to another region can therefore be a useful direction rather than a sign that the repair quest has stopped working.

Once the instrument is repaired, return to the specific wind or mist barrier relevant to your next objective. The Pipa connects several quest lines, but owning it does not automatically complete their later conversations and encounters. Continue following each quest's own requirements after the new route opens.

Return when your traversal tools change

A blocked route often means you need a later tool, not that you overlooked a nearby key. The Feather Bow can interact with certain hanging objects, Flaming Mane clears damp brambles, and the Tiger Cannon breaks the rock barriers associated with it. Their discovery order is part of the exploration structure, so an early map can legitimately contain a passage you cannot open yet.

The Illusory Pipa is another important example because its repair spans multiple regions. Once restored, it clears specified mist and wind barriers and opens access to further exploration, including the Mountain of Imprisonment route. Keep the name of the obstacle and the nearest Bell together in your notes so you can return with the right tool.

Opening a physical route and preserving a quest are separate concerns. A new Phantom Edge may let you revisit a chest later, while a story event can already have changed the NPC who would have given you a reward. Before advancing a major quest, check the journal and the relevant missable conditions instead of assuming that fast travel makes every unfinished objective recoverable.

Keep the later story checkpoint separate

The Mirage Estate warning concerns the larger mystery and ending route, not the earlier settlement change after Bai Chilian. Published ending guides recommend completing the available purple story quests before entering the estate. If the game warns about unfinished business, review the journal before continuing rather than assuming that the ability to fast travel makes the warning harmless.

The important connected threads include the Illusory Pipa, the Herald's Illusion and Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. These lead through optional regions, the Acolyte Masks and the Crystal Puppet Eyes, so progress can be blocked by a missing prerequisite somewhere else. A quest being marked optional means the main story can continue without it; it does not mean the quest is irrelevant to the ending you want.

Some objectives continue inside the estate, including later steps involving Long Pillars and Quick Hand Zhang. The practical rule is to finish every currently available prerequisite, then continue those ongoing objectives when the next area makes them accessible. Avoid turning a guide's shorthand about finishing everything first into an impossible demand to collect an item located beyond the checkpoint itself.

Upgrade the move set you actually use

Forge introduces equipment upgrades at the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley. After that introduction, the upgrade function is available from Bells, so you do not need to travel back to her whenever you obtain another material. Main weapons and Phantom Edges use their own material categories; possession of a large pile of one material does not mean it can upgrade every item.

An upgrade can unlock an action or a passive effect, not just increase a displayed attack value. Check the equipment's advanced information and the next upgrade preview before deciding whether another level will change the way you fight. A recommendation that relies on an unlocked ability can perform very differently when you try it with the base weapon.

Weapons can be reverted to recover their investment, but later upgrade thresholds introduce reforge-talisman requirements. Read the refund screen before confirming, particularly when comparing a main weapon with a Phantom Edge, because they do not use the same reforge item. Do not extend this refund rule to accessory polishing: that is a separate system with different costs.
