How to Get Flaming Mane
· 5 min readGet Flaming Mane by defeating Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster, in Pangzhen. This is a main-path reward, and its Burning Path function clears the damp brambles that block certain routes. You do not need to find a secret chest in the first region to obtain the tool.
Continue through Pangzhen
The collected IGN entry places Flame at the far northwestern end of the Pangzhen route. That means encountering brambles earlier is a prompt to remember the location, not proof that you have overlooked a nearby weapon. Continue the main progression until the required boss becomes available, then return to those barriers with Flaming Mane obtained.
This distinction prevents an unnecessary search through every early optional passage. Phantom Blade Zero uses later tools to reopen earlier regions, and Flaming Mane is one of those deliberate dependencies. Keep a short note of the barrier and its nearest Bell so the return trip has a clear destination.
Use it for exploration without rebuilding your loadout
The Burning Path description says its traversal function works even when Flaming Mane is not equipped. That lets you preserve your preferred combat Phantom Edges while interacting with the appropriate bramble obstacle. Do not assume it opens every blocked passage: rocks, wind, hanging objects and other mechanisms have different tool requirements.
After receiving the weapon, revisit the barriers that specifically call for its fire-based interaction. A passage opening does not necessarily complete the quest behind it, so inspect the new area and any journal updates. If the obstacle does not match Flaming Mane's stated function, check the relevant tool rather than repeatedly using the fire attack.
Understand its combat role
The base combat action channels a stream of flame and continually consumes Remnant Sparks. That makes the duration of your commitment and the enemy's movement important. A target moving out of the stream can make a long channel less useful than a shorter action fitted to a safe opening.
Enhancement adds new actions such as a projectile option and a movement-related attack. Soul Tempering changes its flame behavior further, according to the collected equipment entry. Read the abilities available on your actual upgrade level before copying a demonstration, and distinguish those combat upgrades from the basic traversal function that motivated the search.
Return to the obstacle that needs fire
Once Flaming Mane is available, revisit the damp brambles you recorded rather than searching for another key beside them. The tool requirement explains why some early passages could remain inaccessible even after their surrounding enemies were defeated. Keep the nearest Bell and obstacle together so the return trip has a clear destination.
Do not assume that every blocked route uses the same answer. Rock barriers associated with the Tiger Cannon, hanging interactions for the Feather Bow and mist cleared by the Pipa are separate dependencies. Identifying the obstacle first prevents a newly acquired fire tool from becoming a reason to test every closed passage without direction.
Upgrade the move set you actually use
Forge introduces equipment upgrades at the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley. After that introduction, the upgrade function is available from Bells, so you do not need to travel back to her whenever you obtain another material. Main weapons and Phantom Edges use their own material categories; possession of a large pile of one material does not mean it can upgrade every item.
An upgrade can unlock an action or a passive effect, not just increase a displayed attack value. Check the equipment's advanced information and the next upgrade preview before deciding whether another level will change the way you fight. A recommendation that relies on an unlocked ability can perform very differently when you try it with the base weapon.
Weapons can be reverted to recover their investment, but later upgrade thresholds introduce reforge-talisman requirements. Read the refund screen before confirming, particularly when comparing a main weapon with a Phantom Edge, because they do not use the same reforge item. Do not extend this refund rule to accessory polishing: that is a separate system with different costs.
Use weapon switching to protect your Sha-Chi
Weapon switching has a defensive purpose as well as an offensive one: it restores Soul's Sha-Chi. Blocking and heavy attacks spend that resource, so an otherwise comfortable fight can turn dangerous when you keep using the same weapon with an almost empty meter. Switch before the enemy breaks your guard, then decide whether the next opening is safe enough to attack.
The switch has a cooldown, which prevents it from being an unlimited answer to every incoming hit. Watch the enemy's guard meter alongside your own instead of emptying your resources whenever a combo becomes available. When the enemy is about to recover from a break, ending your attack early can leave you better prepared for the next exchange.
A practical pairing gives each weapon a recognizable job. One can build damage or a status effect while the other helps you recover, control a crowd or create a break. That division is more useful than choosing two names from a ranking and treating their individual damage ratings as proof that they work well together.
Return when your traversal tools change
A blocked route often means you need a later tool, not that you overlooked a nearby key. The Feather Bow can interact with certain hanging objects, Flaming Mane clears damp brambles, and the Tiger Cannon breaks the rock barriers associated with it. Their discovery order is part of the exploration structure, so an early map can legitimately contain a passage you cannot open yet.
The Illusory Pipa is another important example because its repair spans multiple regions. Once restored, it clears specified mist and wind barriers and opens access to further exploration, including the Mountain of Imprisonment route. Keep the name of the obstacle and the nearest Bell together in your notes so you can return with the right tool.
Opening a physical route and preserving a quest are separate concerns. A new Phantom Edge may let you revisit a chest later, while a story event can already have changed the NPC who would have given you a reward. Before advancing a major quest, check the journal and the relevant missable conditions instead of assuming that fast travel makes every unfinished objective recoverable.
