How to Upgrade Medicine

· 5 min read

To upgrade medicine in Phantom Blade Zero, progress to the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen and unlock the healer's upgrade service. You can then enhance medicines from Bells using Remnant Dust and the appropriate Healer's Memory materials. Finding those materials earlier does not mean the medicine-upgrade option should already be available.

Reach the correct upgrade service

Forge handles the early introduction to weapon enhancement, while Jewel introduces accessory polishing in the Village of Lu. Medicine improvement is a later service in Pangzhen, so repeatedly revisiting Forge will not substitute for reaching the Green Serpent House. The collected guides agree on that location even where the healer's name is rendered differently.

Once the service is introduced, its function becomes part of the Bell menu. That lets you use newly found materials without returning to the house for every enhancement. Open the medicine category and inspect the cost and effect for the specific item you intend to improve.

Use the matching tier of memory

The collected upgrade guidance distinguishes Apprentice, Skilled and Master Healer's Memory. These serve different stages of medicine enhancement rather than acting as interchangeable copies of one material. If an upgrade remains unavailable despite having some memories in your inventory, compare the required tier with the item you actually own.

Medicine upgrades can improve the effect and increase available uses, making the preview more informative than the item name alone. A recommendation for an upgraded medicine should not be read as evidence that its starting version has identical capacity. Prioritize the medicine you use regularly before investing in a situational item whose role you have not tested.

Healing Art is a separate improvement

The ability menu at Bells also contains Healing Art, which increases medicine uses and can help before direct medicine upgrading is unlocked. It is not the same operation as spending Healer's Memory on an individual item. If your immediate problem is a shortage of charges early on, check the ability option instead of searching for a Pangzhen service in the first region.

Maximum health progression is separate again. Memory Flowers develop that part of Soul's survivability, while accessories can modify the benefit you receive from healing. Understanding those categories makes it easier to tell whether you need a larger health pool, more uses, stronger recovery or a safer moment to use what you already have.

Check which improvement you are buying

Before spending materials, read whether the selected improvement affects the medicine itself or another part of your recovery setup. Weapon enhancement, accessory polishing and Healing Art are connected to preparation but are not interchangeable menus. A guide to one system should not be used as proof that the same material or refund rule applies to all three.

After upgrading, inspect the equipped medicine again and make sure you are using the item you intended to improve. Carrying two medicine types makes it possible to compare the wrong charge count or effect by accident. If the real complaint is that the healing command does not register, use the separate control checks rather than expecting enhancement to repair the button.

Match healing to the opening you have

Your medicine selection should answer the kind of damage you are taking. A direct heal is useful when you need health immediately, while a restorative that works over time asks you to survive long enough for its benefit to arrive. Some options also restore Sha-Chi, reduce damage or help with ailments, so the largest healing number is not automatically the best choice.

Bells restore health and refill medicine uses in the standard game. Ordinary defeated enemies do not respawn just because you rest, which makes a cleared route back to a Bell valuable when you are low on supplies. This is a different situation from choosing to drink during an active boss combination, where the opening itself determines whether the heal will help.

You can equip two medicine types, allowing a more immediate recovery option to sit beside a longer-lasting buff. Check the remaining charges of the selected medicine before entering another encounter and use the item description to distinguish gradual recovery from an instant effect. If healing feels weak rather than completely unresponsive, inspect your upgrades and equipped accessory effects before treating the input as broken.

Choose accessories before spending polishing materials

Accessory polishing becomes available after meeting Jewel in the Village of Lu. Once unlocked, it can be accessed through Bells, making it part of your regular preparation rather than a reason to revisit her shop before every fight. Polishing consumes Remnant Dust and the appropriate crystal, and the preview tells you how the particular accessory changes.

The useful question is whether the effect helps your current loadout often enough to justify an equipped slot. A bonus tied to one weapon category is less consistent if you keep switching into a different category, while a resistance accessory can be excellent for one encounter without becoming a permanent choice. Read the conditions as carefully as the displayed percentage.

Accessory slots expand through ability upgrades, but offensive, defensive and support equipment still have category limits. Do not copy a full late-game loadout onto a character that has not unlocked the required capacity. More importantly, do not assume that polishing can be refunded like ordinary weapon enhancement; the collected accessory guidance warns that the material investment is permanent.

Return when your traversal tools change

A blocked route often means you need a later tool, not that you overlooked a nearby key. The Feather Bow can interact with certain hanging objects, Flaming Mane clears damp brambles, and the Tiger Cannon breaks the rock barriers associated with it. Their discovery order is part of the exploration structure, so an early map can legitimately contain a passage you cannot open yet.

The Illusory Pipa is another important example because its repair spans multiple regions. Once restored, it clears specified mist and wind barriers and opens access to further exploration, including the Mountain of Imprisonment route. Keep the name of the obstacle and the nearest Bell together in your notes so you can return with the right tool.

Opening a physical route and preserving a quest are separate concerns. A new Phantom Edge may let you revisit a chest later, while a story event can already have changed the NPC who would have given you a reward. Before advancing a major quest, check the journal and the relevant missable conditions instead of assuming that fast travel makes every unfinished objective recoverable.
